Stocks end broadly higher as China eases worries with currency action Stocks were higher in the U.S. and in other markets around the world after China conducted a stronger than expected daily fixing of its currency, which eased some concerns about the countries trade fight, and emerging currency fight, with the U.S. Stocks have recovered much of their early week losses, but are still well off the record highs reached last month as earnings season continues but nears its winding down phase. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims fell 8,000 to 209,000 in the week ended August 3. Wholesale inventories were flat in June while sales fell 0.3%. TOP NEWS: Lyft (LYFT) shares rose 3% after the ride-hailing service operator reported better than expected revenues and less than expected losses in the second quarter. Lyft, which increased its outlook for the full-year, likely raised the bar for competitor Uber (UBER), which reports on its own results after the market close today. While the shares are getting a bit of a lift this morning, Lyft's stock is still well below where it opened on March 29 and below the $72 per share price that had been set for its IPO. Shares of Booking Holdings (BKNG) were also higher following earnings from the company formally known as Priceline. Conversely, shares of Kraft Heinz (KHC) fell 8.6% following the food maker's report of preliminary financial results for the first half of 2019. "The level of decline we experienced in the first half of this year is nothing we should find acceptable moving forward," said Kraft Heinz CEO Miguel Patricio. Sarepta (SRPT) shares dropped 6.5% following the company's quarterly report and after a serious adverse event linked to the company's SRP-9001 treatment was added to an FDA database that tracks such adverse events. The FAERS addition prompted a trading halt in the stock, after which the company said the adverse event report was "erroneously submitted" to the FDA's adverse event reporting system and was not submitted to the database by a Sarepta employee or the study's principal investigator. "While Sarepta and its principal investigator remain blinded to the study, the study drug safety monitoring board is unblinded to the event and has reviewed the issue and recommended the study continue uninterrupted," the company added. Meanwhile, Barrick Gold (GOLD) was fractionally higher after Bloomberg reported that the company is weighing a sale of its Tongon gold mine in the Ivory Coast. The miner is also seeking to find a buyer for its Massawa gold projects in Senegal and considering divesting other projects, including the Lumwana copper mine in Zambia. Additionally, Bloomberg reported that UniCredit (UNCFF) chairman Fabrizio Saccomanni has died at the age of 76. Vice chairman Cesare Bisoni will assume the chairman's position on an interim basis. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was Corindus (CVRS), which rose 76.9% after it agreed to be acquired by Siemens Healthineers for $4.28 per share and reported quarterly results. Also higher after reporting quarterly results were Roku (ROKU) and Jack in the Box (JACK), which gained a respective 20.9% and 16.8%. Among the notable losers was Angi Homeservices (ANGI), which fell 25.3% after it reported quarter results and after IAC (IAC) disclosed its intention to explore the possibility of a distribution of its equity interest in Match Group (MTCH) and Angi.
